Lummi Island is one of the only places in the world that still practices the ancient fishing practice called reefnet fishing. Several fishing boats line up in a row and across from each other, with nets cast in between them. Each boat has a lookout high on a stand watching for approaching Sockeye Salmon to come into the nets. Once enough Salmon have entered the nets, the lookout guys give the signal to pull up the nets and their catch. Each summer, late in August, Lummi Island hosts its reef net festival, where visitors can enjoy a salmon picnic and also go out and tour the reef net boats.
